During Passover, a feast of seven days, the Jewish people remember the miraculous events of G-d taking them out of slavery in Egypt into freedom. Passover also commemorates the 40 days in Sinai when G-d revealed himself to Moses and gave to the children of Israel the Ten Commandments and the Torah. (Exodus 12:1-27)

To observe all that G-d has commanded, each year at the festival of Passover a special meal is held called a Seder. Seder means order. There is a prescribed order to the meal with prayer, food, and drink as well as telling the story of the exodus from a special book called "Haggadah".

For the entire seven days of Passover something called "matzah" is eaten. Matzah is called the "bread of affliction." Because the Hebrews had to leave with Moses in great haste, there was no time to allow the bread to rise. For the entire holiday, no food is consumed that contains any leavening whatsoever. Homes are meticulously cleaned (the original spring house cleaning!) to remove every last crumb or vestige of leaven.

At the Seder three matzah are placed in a special decorative holder called a "Matza Tosh," made from silk or other fabric.

All the pageantry, symbolism, and ritual of the Passover Seder remind us that we are free men and no longer slaves.

Enjoyment of all the items surrounding the Passover meal such as the Seder plate, the cup of Elijah, and the Matzah cover are constant reminders of the powerful events in the days of Moses.

The New Testament relates the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples to the Passover Seder. It is at this opportunity that Jesus shares the "New Covenant" using the Matzah and the wine to represent his body and his blood.

Having a community Seder at the time of Passover may help congregations come closer to the teachings of Jesus by following the manner by which He lived His life.
