The Prayer Shawl is the most recognizable sign of Jewish worship. It is worn at prayer, or by a groom at his wedding. The origin of the prayer shawl lies in Numbers 15 calling for the attachment of fringes to the four-cornered garments, worn in Jesus' time, as a reminder of all the commandments of the Lord. Today for many observant Jews, the use of a woolen prayer shawl is most important. Seeing the Almighty as the shepherd taking care of sheep whom He loves, the man wrapping himself in the shawl is actually wrapping himself also in the love of God as he prays. Hoshen refers to the sacred breastplate worn by the Jewish high priest as stated in the Exodus.
According to Biblical description, the breastplate contains 12 specific stones, each stone representing one of the Twelve Tribes. The color of each Tribe’s stone became the identifying banner color for that tribe. One of the biggest mysteries of the breastplate is its original stone composition. Although the Bible identifies the stones of the breastplate by name, these names have not been used since Biblical times and scholars have been unable to translate them.
