The Hanukkiah commemorates the miracle associated with the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. According to Jewish tradition, a small amount of consecrated oil—enough for one day—continued burning for eight days. A Hanukkiah has eight branches for the nights of Hanukkah plus a separate shamash, or helper candle, used to light the others. One additional light is kindled each evening until all eight Hanukkah lights shine on the final night.
