Masada - An Epic Story - Field Guide from Carta By Hanan Eshel

Masada, a natural, isolated rock cliff overlooking the Dead Sea, has an awesome history. The site was populated for close to 200 years and the historic, epigraphic and archaeological evidence combined gives us an idea of the drama that engulfed the site. The visitor to Masada encounters remains from three distinct historical periods, each containing its own unique characteristics:
• Masada during the time of Herod, even though at this time he was not in residence on the rock cliff
• The fortress during the Herodian period when the King resided there
• Masada of the First Jewish Revolt whose refugees dwelt on the cliff top following the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, until its conquest and occupation by the Romans three to four years later.
Professor Yigael Yadin excavated the famous Masada during the mid-1960’s and the results of the excavation gives a poignant picture of these three salient periods of Masada’s occupation.
This richly illustrated and easy to read gem of a book tells the whole story.
